  • Phineas Banning & Benjamin Wilson, Teamwork in Southland Development

DEEP WATER PORT & RAILWAYS for SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

The foundational development of the Port of Los Angeles, Southern California Railway system, and City of Wilmington can be traced to a singular, transformative event: acquisition of 2,400 acres of The Rancho San Pedro along San Pedro Bay. In 1854, this Bay functioned as a tidal estuary, where the Los Angeles River channel merged seamlessly with the Pacific Ocean, blending fresh river water and ocean tides.

This essay, established on original and previously unpublished sources, presents a distinctive thesis that these three landmark institutions originated 172 years ago through a documented land transfer. The leadership and vision of Phineas Banning and Benjamin Wilson between 1854 and 1880 were instrumental in shaping the early growth and transformation of Southern California.

Currently spanning fifteen pages, the essay offers a comprehensive and newly developed account of these formative years, addressing inaccuracies and gaps found in existing literature. For a detailed copy, jtbueche@outlook.com
